Waihi Beach Volunteer Fire BrigadeA fire brigade with no engine, no pump and no hoses. That was Waihi Beach Volunteer Fire Brigade when it formed in December 1953. Messrs J Toms, H Lomas, L Ward, L Davidson, O Pope and N Cameron were elected as members at a public meeting held at the picture theatre. An old ex Air Force fire engine was acquired and parked in the open until a 20 x 30 foot station was built on the current site in 1957. When Waihi received a new truck the old one was passed on to Waihi Beach but the struggle for equipment and uniforms continued. In 1972 the brigade was finally blessed with a new engine and pump and new uniforms followed soon after. From historic material written by Hank Hanlen |
